It’s time to start school lessons again! I’m excited!! I love the fall and the start of a new school year. It brings a routine and stability that was not present over the summer. By the time the first day of school rolls around, we are all ready.
How can you make the first day of school special, especially when you homeschool and the “schoolroom” doesn’t look different from the summer? Here are five homeschool gifts for back-to-school to get your school started on the right foot.
Back-to-School Gifts for Your Homeschool
1. Fresh supplies
Everyone loves new supplies! Go shopping together or surprise your kids with a back-to-school supplies scavenger hunt.
Maybe your kids will begin a new subject this year, such as art or dictation. Put the supplies they will need in a special basket.
Or, maybe you want to add a little pop of color to your narrations.
2. First day of school picture
We take a first day of school picture with the front door as our backdrop. It’s not the prettiest backdrop, but it provides a frame of reference. We can see how much they have grown, looking over the pictures from year to year. We can also remember where we were living that year.
Record your child’s interests on the All About Me pages. It is fun to look back at their answers over the years and see them mature from wanting to be a snowy street sweeper at age 5 to a professional ballerina, missionary, and homeschool mom at age 11.
4. Special meal or treat
Make the day special with a back-to-school meal. We have had everything from a big breakfast of pancakes and eggs to dinner at a restaurant with Dad to frozen yogurt after dinner. It’s okay if the special meal is not the same each year. The point is to celebrate!
This is the most important gift you can give as your family starts a new year. It takes time to adjust to a new routine, new subjects or difficulty levels, and sometimes even just getting out of bed after a lazy summer. Even if you are ready and excited to begin the new year, it can still be difficult. Give yourself and your kids grace and ease into the new school year. It’s not a sprint, but a marathon.
